Chemical Industry Safety Film Upgrades

After witnessing the aftermath of the 1989 Phillips Petroleum Company mega blast (3.5 on the Richter scale), up close and personal, job safety took on a whole new meaning. The fact that some untrained visitor to the plant could make an error that takes 23 lives with the flip of a valve was somewhat frightening.
Which led me to conclude that you are only as safe as the weakest link.
We were a specialty contractor and found our skill set in high demand providing large diameter drilled shafts in very restricted spaces. These low clearance jobs took us to well over 200 chemical plants, in several states. Each plant would have a different system and a safety film to match. Tests were always written in English and sharing answers was not usually frowned upon. The new hire entry authorization required the Indoctrination class, that was most likely co-written by lawyers with no understanding of what it is like to show up at 5am to watch a video, that puts a few to sleep, telling you how many horns you may hear and where to go.
After the 1990 ARCO explosion, I hung up my contractor badge and started focusing on audio visual training tools. For years we have made or improved Industrial/Plant safety films using a simple and very effective method to better convey plant dangers. This system is especially useful if English is a second language.
For the past 20 years we have studied Chemical Plant Introduction Safety Films and have some amazing results that we would like to share.
A few simple changes can increase the odds of anyone attending a safety class surviving the Plant Experience safely.

Statistics

The average reading comprehension level of U.S. high school graduates is generally estimated to fall between the 7th and 8th grade level, based on national literacy assessments and educational benchmarks.

Comprehension

The average math comprehension level of a U.S. high school graduate typically aligns with 8th to 9th grade proficiency, based on national assessments like the NAEP (Nation’s Report Card) and educational benchmarks.
More than 50% of current four-year college graduates do not reach “proficient” levels in reading, math and science.

Into the plant

With these labor pool realities entering the plant workforce we started examining plant safety films and how to increase safety awareness.  We noticed that a majority of these mandatory films to enter a plant are given at 5 or 6am. Our system can increase comprehension even at this hour of the day.
